A tender gardener and talented chef, Joy Moore is the gardening teacher at BIS. Joy believes that food has an almost sacred quality. She tries to leave students with an understanding of the importance of homegrown high quality foods. Joy earned her Certification of Organic Horticulture through UCSC in 2007 and has been teaching gardening and nutrition since 2008. She is also a part of projects that involve food justice and affordable housing. As Joy says, “Food and its production is beyond essential,” something she imparts by showing students the entire food cycle.
